Biopunk

I really don't know what I would do!!! I would be like that's soooo cool, BUT I would be terrified of getting caught and being classified as a terrorist be cause I'm playing with genetics! The Steve Kurtz case that I read in Part III really had me like no way I would even want to be envolved in ANYTHING with genetics being in my apartment or garage. On the other hand what if these people are trying to help cure something? What if they are so close to curing a disease that professionals can't cure? I really don't know what to say because these people could make a bacteria that could be able to kill thousands of people and that really scares me. So basically what I'm saying is if my roommate is doing all this I would tell them to get all these stuff out of my house because I am not going to jail for you! I know it's kind of harsh and they may be doing something good but I'm not ready to take that chance because it seems like the FBI will try to find a reason to stop you and accuse you of something like they did to Steve Kurtz.

  1. We think a lot alike! If they are striving to do some good for the world, they to move the lab to a different location other than my living area. In concerns to the law being involved, if it was that dangerous, they shouldn't allow the equipment/material to be sold to the public in the first place. "Terrorism" is a strong word, and I don't think these biopunks really mean any harm. People tend to get uncomfortable with subject matter they do not understand.

  2. I think the problem is how secretive some of these people are about their work. If it were legitimate scientific research they shouldn't have to do it behind closed doors. Society has learned not to trust the outsider because they are normally trying to hide something they shouldn't be doing. I just don't like the idea of a scientist trying to hide their secret work from the public because it conjures images or a mad scientist or a terrorist. Everyone expects law enforcement to keep track of the people trying to hurt us but we get upset when they are just trying to do their jobs. I do think Kurtz was unnecessarily harassed for his home lab; but what can you expect when you dial 911 to report a death and they show up and find a secret lab? People fear the unknown and being secretive isn't going to help the scientific community.

  3. I would agree with you. There is a place to conduct these experiments and at a house is not one of them. Especially when it comes to bacteria or viruses being handled. It would be a big risk to let your roommate potentially expose you to whatever they are doing. Although terrorism is a strong word, the presence of the law would be enough to kick my roommate out as well.
